This analysis goes beyond many phylogenies in exploring how phylogenetic structure imposed by morphology, ecology, and geography reveals useful evolutionary data. A comprehensive range of such diversity is evaluated within tribe Indigofereae and outgroups from sister tribes. A combined data set of 321 taxa (over one-third of the tribe) by 80 morphological characters, 833 aligned nuclear ribosomal ITS/5.8S sites, and an indel data set of 33 characters was subjected to parsimony analysis. Notable results include the Madagascan dry forest Disynstemon resolved as sister to tribe Indigofereae, and all species of the large genus Indigofera comprise just four main clades, each diagnosable by morphological synapomorphies and ecological and geographical predilections. These results suggest niche conservation (ecology) and dispersal limitation (geography) are important processes rendering signature shapes to the Indigofereae phylogeny in different biomes. Clades confined to temperate and succulent-rich biomes are more dispersal limited and have more geographical phylogenetic structure than those inhabiting tropical grass-rich vegetation. The African arid corridor, particularly the Namib center of endemism, harbors many of the oldest Indigofera lineages. A rates analysis of nucleotide substitutions confirms that the ages of the oldest crown clades are mostly younger than 16 Ma, implicating dispersal in explaining the worldwide distribution of the tribe.

Classification infraspécifique des formes spontanées de Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. (Fabaceae) à partir de données morphologiques R.S. Pasquet ('$) Infraspecific taxonomy of wild Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. is still r a % y z ? k r A review of the literature has shown that no less than 20 taxa have been described during one century and a half. A living collection of 59 samples is studied using 34 morphological characters including primary leaves shape, shape of standard appendages and colored marks, keel shape, ovule numbers. The results of multivariate analysis a plied on these characters and the observation of herbarium s ecimens allow the identi5)cation of mor hologically and geographically individualize: groups which are ranked as subspecies.%wo new subs ecies, V nnguiculata subsp. letouzeya Pasquet and subsp. burundiensic Pasquet are d!&ribed: Verdc., caractérisée par des stipules peltées, se réduit à V. unguiculata et à V. nermosa Markötter (Verdcourt 1970, Maréchal et al. 1978). Les taxons spontanés sont au nombre de six dans les classifications de Verdcourt (1970) et de Maréchal et al. (1978). Mais ceux-ci ont connu, depuis 1823, des traitements assez variés comme le montrent les grandes lignes de l'évolution de la taxonomie infraspécifique de V. unguiculata, rappelées dans les tableaux 9 et IO. Près de 20 types se rapportant à des formes spontanées ont été décrits. C'est Thunberg, en 1794 puis 1823, qui fait pour la première fois mention de matériel spontané, en utilisant le binôme Dolichos trilobus sensu Thunb. pour désigner un taxon spontané d'Afrique du Sud. Bien que le genre Vigna ait été décrit en 1824 par Savi, avec comme type du genre Vigna luteola (Jacq.) Benth.j ce n'est qu'en 1839, que Walpers inclut dans le genre Vigna les taxons décrits par E. Meyer dans le genre Scytalis, ainsi que Dolichos trilobus sensu Thunb.: V. catjang (E. Mey.) Walp., V. triloba Walp. (avec lequel il met en synonymie S. protractu E. Mey), et V. hispida (E. Mey.) Walp. En 1847, Dietrich y ajoute V. tenuis (E. Mey.) Dietr. et emploie V. protracta (E. Mey.) Walp. Les formes cultivées et sauvages de V. unguiculata sont alors considérées comme des taxons indépendants.
