Crop wild relatives are species related to cultivated plants, whose populations have evolved in natural conditions and confer them valuable adaptive genetic diversity, that can be used in introgression breeding programs. Targeting four wild lentil taxa in Europe, we applied the predictive characterization approach through the filtering method to identify populations potentially tolerant to drought, salinity, and waterlogging. In parallel, the calibration method was applied to select wild populations potentially resistant to lentil rust and broomrape, using, respectively, 351 and 204 accessions evaluated for these diseases. An ecogeographic land characterization map was used to incorporate potential genetic diversity of adaptive value. We identified 13, 1, 21, and 30 populations potentially tolerant to drought, soil salinity, waterlogging, or resistance to rust, respectively. The models targeting broomrape resistance did not adjust well and thus, we were not able to select any population regarding this trait. The systematic use of predictive characterization techniques may boost the efficiency of introgression breeding programs by increasing the chances of collecting the most appropriate populations for the desired traits. However, these populations must still be experimentally tested to confirm the predictions.

In the absence of previous molecular characterization, we assessed genetic diversity of 53 Moroccan lentil landraces including two local cultivars using simple sequence repeat (SSR) and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP). Nineteen SSRs yielded 213 alleles, and seven AFLP primer combinations gave 766 fragments of which 422 were polymorphic. Moderate to high genetic variation was observed. Several small groups of landraces were differentiated. Interestingly, one of the smallest groups contained short‐cycle landraces with high early vegetative growth. Landraces in that group were from the dry land location of Abda, where they were likely selected for adaptation to drought and heat stress over centuries. Another group contained two landraces from highland areas that may have been selected for specific adaptation to cold stress. A third group contained one landrace from the Zear region known for its seed quality and has been proposed for the protected designation of origin (PDO) quality mark. Both techniques gave evidence of differentiation of the latter landrace supporting the idea of PDO attribution. Functional grouping according to agro‐environmental origins, cycle duration and early vegetative vigour was observed.

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) plays a significant role in human and animal nutrition. It is important to generate baseline information on genetic diversity of local and introduced lentil in Syria. Therefore, this study aimed to assess diversity and relationship among two local varieties and 35 introduced lentil lines from ICARDA using 20 Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) primers.18 primers were able to amplify DNA bands with a total of 184 bands. Primers ISSR5, ISSR11, ISSR13, ISSR15 and ISSR16 presented 100% polymorphism percentage. The mean value of polymorphism percentage was 87.31%. ISSR primers could identify 19 unique bands in all genotypes, 12 of them were positive bands (present) and 7 were negative bands (absent). Primer ISSR11 was able to detect 3 positive unique bands in genotype Ln20. The UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmetical averages) clustering based on ISSR data grouped 37 lentil genotypes into 6 clusters. The lowest genetic distance (0.20) was observed between (Ln15 and Ln16, Ln21 and Ln22, Ln27 and Ln28) which proves that they are closely related. While Ln24 presented the highest genetic distance (0.49) with both Ln18 and Idleb3 which refers to their genetic divergence.
