Abstract: A rescue dig, on a part of the Cojou megalithic alignments at Saint-Just (Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, France), showed a long and complex fréquentation of the site. It began by a series of large hearths dated between 4940 and 4100 B.C. The standing stones were erected at least in two phases separated by the building of a stone «causeway», itself partly covered by a mound which yelded remains of beakers of spécial interest and a large Early Bronze Age urn, dated 2780-2180 B.C. This excavation provided also … Show more

“…However, our research shows a strong geographic concentration of burial remains which helps to refine the distribution patterns at a regional scale. For the first part of Middle Neolithic, the morphology of the long barrow excavated on Ledenez Vihan Qué-ménès shows strong analogies with that of other long barrows excavated in Brittany (Ramé 1864; Giot & L'Helgouach 1955;1956;Giot et al 1995;Briard et al 1989;Briard 1992;Le Roux et al 1989), the geographically closest example being that of Souc'h in Plouhinec (Le Goffic 2004). Radiocarbon dating (UBA-16738, 5624 ± 29 BP) of a sample from the foot of one of the standing stones surrounding the monument calibrates to 4520-4366 cal BC (2 sigma).…”

“…This is suggested by radiocarbon dates from Saint-Just ( Briard et al 1995, 54-56;Le Roux et al 1989), and by the relation of certain coastal menhirs to lower sea-levels (Giot 1990). Equally, it is clear that undecorated menhirs continued to be erected during the 4th and 3rd millennia BC, and probably later (e.g.…”
