Lessons Learned from a Hundred Frac Packs in the Campos Basin

Abstract: This paper presents the state of the art in frac packing learned from more than a hundred operations performed in the Campos Basin, offshore Brazil. Many reservoirs in the Campos Basin are clean tertiary age sandstones, very unconsolidated, with high to ultrahigh permeability. In this scenario, in order to get low skin completions, high conductivity fractures must be created. These can only be obtained with the use of aggressive tip screen out (TSO) techniques. For these reasons, no questions… Show more

“…However, individually, some wells with underbalanced perforating are still estimated to have skin factors that are higher than those in wells with overbalanced perforating. More data are required to show that underbalanced perforating is better than overbalanced perforating in frac-pack operations for well productivity (Neumann et al 2002;Pourciau et al 2005). The average skin factor for OHHGP is 6.4; for HRWP and frac packing, it is 2.8 and 0.74, respectively.…”

“…In 2002 with the launching of Blue Shark, BJ Services, the only company in Brazil to provide offshore pumping and stimulation services in this new millennium, was the one to meet the Campos Basin's needs, as described in Neumann et al, (2002) with the "third" generation of stimulation vessels, and more recently in December 2003, the Blue Angel consolidated the fleet providing the country with most advanced resources in facilities, equipment, instrumentation and safety. In August 2004, Halliburton launching the StimStar I.…”
