Lessons Learned From ASP Flooding Tests in China

Abstract: Although Alkali-Surfactant-Polymer (ASP) flooding enhance oil recovery (EOR) technique has been put forward many years ago, it was not until 2014 that it is first put into industrial application in Daqing Oilfield in China. Under such low oil price, ASP flooding advance in China provides confidence for ASP flooding as a chemical EOR technology. In 2014, ASP flooding entered into industrial application stage first time in history. Crude oil production from ASP flooding in 2015 and 2016 in Daqing Oilfield was 3.… Show more

“…Therefore, the damage of the alkali-containing composite system to the reservoir during the flooding process cannot be ignored (Chen et al, 2014;Guo et al, 2017b;Wang et al, 2016). Finally, the ternary compound flooding produced fluid emulsification degree is very serious, the emulsion structure is very complicated, and the production fluid treatment cost is high (Demin et al, 1999;Guo et al, 2017a;Nguyen and Sadeghi, 2012;Olajire, 2014). In summary, the current commonly used chemical flooding enhanced oil recovery technology cannot meet the needs of effectively improving sweep efficiency, oil washing efficiency, good injectability, and reservoir environmental adaptability.…”

“…DGBE has the longer carbon chain than IBA. Both solvents have similar densities, that is, 0.955 g/cm 3 for DGBE and 0.803 g/cm 3 for IBA. The melting and boiling temperatures of IBA are lower than those of DGBE.…”

“…Alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding intends to integrate a synergy of chemical mixtures, e.g., alkalis, surfactants, co-solvents, and polymers, in order to recover residual oil [1][2][3][4][5]: alkalis and surfactants mobilize residual oil and reduce the interfacial tension between the displacing phase and the oil; polymer slug enhances mobility ratios and volumetric sweep efficiencies. Successful ASP flooding can be achieved by designing an optimal ASP formula that is closely related to phase types, i.e., microemulsion, such as Winsor types I (II-), II (II+), and III, which formation salinity influences significantly.…”

“…Alkali react with the acidic and other components in crude oil to produce in situ soap with the interaction of additional surfactant to reduce interfacial tension (IFT). And also it reduces the absorption of surfactant in the formation; alkali was consider an emulsification agent in ASP flooding, which lead to stable emulsion. , Although, for low acid number oil, Daqing oil, the interaction of surfactant only with strong alkali like NaOH was able to reduce the IFT. , …”
