Lessons learned from the CROES percutaneous nephrolithotomy global study

Abstract: The CROES PCNL Global Study is the largest real-life study providing new insights into general and special conditions. Because of the vast number of patients included, rare conditions including renal anomalies, solitary kidneys and patient characteristics like severe CKD, super obesity and old age could be analysed. Besides this information, a nomogram was developed. And for the first time, the influence of caseload volume was established.

“…Description of complication Trainee literature is controversial as to whether outcomes are equally inferior for all types of abnormal anatomy, or indeed that for some types might not be inferior at all [1,29]. Similarly, the literature is conflicting on whether the skin-to-stone distance really matters and external validation studies of the S.T.O.N.E.…”

“…Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the 'gold standard' treatment for large and/or complex renal stones, and data show that while overall stone-free rate (SFR) is 76%; complications may have increased with time [1]. However, stone complexity is a confounder influencing both outcomes and lowering the validity of conclusions if not properly assessed [2].…”

“…However, results of studies investigating the effect of ORSS on PNL outcomes are controversial. 4 When we analyzed previous studies on the effect of ORSS on PNL, we found that open pyelolithotomy, open nephrolithotomy, open nephropyelolithotomy, and partial nephrectomy for a non-functional part of the kidney were all grouped as ORSS. For the first time, our study categorizes patients who have undergone PNL procedure according to the types of previous ORSS.…”
