Let’s Talk About CUIs: Putting Conversational User Interface Design Into Practice

Abstract: As CUIs become more prevalent in both academic research and the commercial market, it becomes more essential to design usable and adoptable CUIs. Though research on the usability and design of CUIs has been growing greatly over the past decade, we see that many usability issues are still prevalent in current conversational voice interfaces, from issues in feedback and visibility, to learnability, to error correction, and more. These issues still exist in the most current conversational interfaces in the commer… Show more

“…However, the nature of these domains means there can be additional obstacles when entering research phases that require strict considerations of medical ethics, laws, and standardized practices. Improving consistency in CA research and implementation may benefit from reaching out to other disciplines (eg, cognitive sciences, linguistics) [ 78 ], combining existing theories and evaluation approaches (see the “Lack of Guidance in Evaluation” section), and examining guidelines from both academia and industry [ 79 ]. While broad challenges around CAs must be considered within health care and well-being contexts, this review also identifies more nuanced challenges for these domains.…”

“…It will be a critical and collaborative effort in looking back and forward, i.e., consolidating ethics related research of the past and setting the agenda for future CUI research on ethics going forward. This builds on previous CUI workshops that explored theories and methods [6,13], grand challenges and future design perspectives [2,14,37] and collaborative interactions [40]. To push ahead with a multidisciplinary perspective on ethics for CUI research, we aim to:…”

“…The workshop primarily aims to encourage wide-ranging discussions about the future of automotive conversational user interfaces in order to promote future research partnerships between the Auto-UI and CUI communities, following in the tradition of previous "CUI @" workshops [3,4,14,16]. To encourage creative, divergent consideration of the future of this topic, this workshop aims to gamify conversations, drawing inspiration from the "What Could Go Wrong" card game from a previous Auto-UI workshop [13].…”
