Leukotriene B4 in synovial fluid

Abstract: COMMUNICATIONSadded to the medium in order to inhibit neuronal uptake only. As our study has shown cocaine to be a direct agonist at a-adrenoceptors and also to potentiate responses to acetylcholine by a postjunctional mechanism in the rat anococcygeus the use of cocaine in such studies with this tissue would seem inadvisable.

“…However, the groups were not matched for age, sex, or background drug therapy. LTB4 has been detected in the synovial fluid of RA patients (27,28), and reduced chemotactic sensitivity of peripheral blood neutrophils has been noted in RA patients (29). Furthermore, preincubation of normal neutrophils with chemotactic factors results in specific desensitization of the neutrophils to the chemotactic factor (30)(31)(32)(33).…”

“…Finally, it has been shown to exert antiapoptotic activity on neutrophils (10). LTB 4 has been detected in significant concentrations in various inflammatory conditions, including inflammatory synovial exudates (11,12), psoriatic skin lesions (13,14), and sputum from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (15). LTB 4 has also been shown to play a role in experimental models of asthma (16), ulcerative colitis (17), and postischemic tissue injury (18,19).…”

“…Thus, LTB4 may serve as an intracellular second messenger in the receptors for the chemotactic factors described above. However, no report has compared the LTB, production in neonatal PMN with that of adult PMN, partly because of the great difficulty of separating LTB4 from its stereospecific isomers, and partly because of the great difficulty in measuring LTB4 at the low concentrations present in biological fluids (7).…”

“…And LTB, is reported to exist in the synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and gout, and in the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (7)(8)(9). PMN not only show chemotaxis when exposed to LTB4 but they also produce LTB4 when stimulated by chemotactic factors such as C5a, fMLP, PAF, and by the calcium ionophore A23187 (10)(11)(12)(13)(14).…”
