This essay is about superluminal motion. It is generally believed that special relativity prohibits movements faster than the speed of light. It is explained which motion is actually forbidden by special relativity and why. Tachyons are breafly discussed and it is explained that, due to internal instability, tachyon fields cannot be used to transmit information faster than the speed of light. However, as John Stuart Bell remarked, “what is proved by the impossibility proofs is lack of imagination”. Inspired by the Frenkel–Kontorova model of crystal dislocations, we demonstrate the way to overcome the light speed barrier by introducing elvisebrions. Elvisebrions are defined as objects that can exist in the case when some hidden sectors, very weakly interacting with the visible sector, are either not Lorentz invariant, or Lorentz invariant but with different limiting velocities. In this case, elvisebrions can move in a superluminal manner without violating our existing physical models.

An alternate time-space framework is proposed by means of a hyperbolic scator algebraic formalism where the deformed Lorentz transformations are an immediate consequence of the formal properties of the algebra. We survey the group properties of the hyperbolic product in the restricted, super-restricted and zero magnitude subsets as well as in the complete scator set. Some properties of the magnitude are derived together with a decomposition of 1 + n dimensional scators in n products of scator elements with scalar component and only one non-vanishing director component. These results are used to describe the scator properties in 1 + n dimensions. The super-restricted subset is associated with superluminal frames or tachyons. The various compositions of subluminal and superluminal events in the same direction follow the canonical superluminal Lorentz transformations interpretation. Composition of orthogonal components produce novel results. Products of scators with components within and outside the light pyramid yield sub or super luminal scators as well as scators belonging to a mixed state.

Revisiting Barry Cox and James Hill's theory of superluminal motion: a possible solution to the problem of spinless tachyon localization

In 2012, Barry Cox and James Hill published a new and elegant way to deduce the formulae of extended relativity, developed by Erasmo Recami and others during the 1960s and 1970s. Extended relativity applies to superluminal or FTL (faster than light in the vacuum) particles, called tachyons by the late American physicist Gerald Feinberg. However, tachyons generate causality paradoxes in special relativity when used for signalling. These paradoxes are safely removed only in a space-time containing a preferred inertial reference frame. Moreover, quantum properties should be taken into account. They cause further trouble for tachyons because, for instance, spin-zero FTL particles satisfying the Klein-Gordon equation cannot be localized as pointlike particles, contrary to all other known fundamental constituents of matter. Perhaps the most interesting suggestion in Cox and Hill's paper is that a certain freedom is allowed in the theory of superluminal particles as no such particle has been reliably detected until now, so that it is worthwhile exploring theoretical alternatives. We shall prove that an idea from Cox and Hill's paper, when applied not in the context of extended relativity but in the framework of F. R. Tangherlini's absolute synchronization, allows the problem of tachyon localization for spinless particles to be solved.
