Lewinella aurantiaca sp. nov., a carotenoid pigment-producing bacterium isolated from surface seawater

Abstract: A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, carotenoid-pigmented, motile-by-gliding bacterium, which was designated as SSH13T, was isolated from a surface seawater sample collected from Sehwa Beach in the Republic of Korea. Strain SSH13T was oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and grew at 2–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), in the presence of 0.5–6% NaCl and within a pH range of pH 6–10 (optimum, pH 8). The novel isolate required NaCl for growth and grew optimally with approximately 2 % NaCl. Chemotaxonomic and morpholo… Show more

“…GCR10 T was only resistant to erythromycin and cefazolin and susceptible to all of the other antibiotics, however the reference strain Chryseobacterium piscicola VQ-6316s T was susceptible to all antibiotics. This antibiotic-resistant novel bacteria could be used as a potential agent for bioremediation of antibiotic-polluted environments and to clean water ecosystems by biodegradation of antibiotics by a biotic process as described previously [51].…”

“…Strain SD6 T and its reference strains were cultured and extracted for carotenoid analysis. Carotenoids were extracted using a 10 ml methanol/acetone (1 : 1, v/v) mixture and the absorption spectrum was evaluated with a spectrophotometer (Multiskan GO; Thermo Fisher Scientific) [45].…”

“…Isoprenoid quinones were extracted using chloroform and methanol at a ratio of 2 : 1 (v/v) and were analysed using high-performance lipid chromatography by following a previously published method [40,41]. Cellular extracts for carotenoid analysis were prepared with a 10 ml methanolacetone (v/v, 1 : 1) mixture [42], and the absorption spectrum of the carotenoid pigments were judged using a spectrophotometer (Multiskan GO, Thermo Fisher Scientific). The presence of flexirubin-type pigments was investigated using 20 % KOH solution (w/v) [43].…”
