“…Indeed, topical ocular application of lidocaine has been shown to ameliorate ocular pain in patients with ophthalmic postherpetic neuralgia with the lack of systemic adverse effects. 68 Nonetheless, it should be noted that local anesthetics are administered at much higher concentrations in clinical practice than in the present work, and at clinical concentrations may impair corneal epithelial wound healing in a dose-dependent manner. 69 Further, the prolonged use of topical ophthalmic anesthetics, such as that associated with the abuse of these drugs, may lead to severe ocular complications.…”

“…Topical clonazepam, whereby a tablet is sucked without swallowing and then spit (Gremeau‐Richard et al., ) or the tablet dissolved orally before swallowing (Amos et al., ), has been reported to be beneficial for treating stomatodynia or burning mouth syndrome. Finally, lidocaine eye drops attenuate pain associated with ophthalmic PHN (Kanai et al., ), and 0.5% gallium maltolate effectively reducing trigeminal PHN (Bernstein, ). There is also a recent analysis of open‐label applications of 5% LMP in 24 cases of trigeminal neuropathic pain; 54% report benefit, 17% minimal change and 25% no change (Kern et al., ).…”
