Life History of Paracoccus marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on Four Host Plant Species Under Laboratory Conditions

Abstract: Life history of the mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink, on three ornamental plants [Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L., Acalypha wilkesiana (Muell.-Arg.), and Plumeria rubra L.] and one weed species (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) was studied under laboratory conditions. Mealybugs were able to develop, survive, and reproduce on all four hosts; however, there were differences in the life history parameters. Adult females that developed on acalypha and parthenium emerged approximately 1 d earli… Show more

“…Female P. kraunhiae reared on broad bean seeds laid an average of 965 eggs per female at 24 ºC (narai and Murai, 2002). Fertility values reported for other species are lower than those obtained for P. calceolariae in this study and include, for example, 72 % for M. hirsutus on hibiscus cuttings at 25 ºC (Chong et al, 2008) and 82.2 -83.5 % for P. marginatus on different substrates at 25 ºC (Amarasekare et al, 2008).…”

“…generational times reported for other species reared in different substrates are in general shorter than those obtained for P. calceolariae here. This is the case for Paracoccus marginatus (24.4 -25.5 days at 25 ºC, depending on the substrate; Amarasekare et al, 2008), Planococcus ficus (28.1 days at 25 ºC, reared on grapevines; Walton and Pringle, 2005), Maconellicoccus hirsutus (32.4 days at 25 ºC, reared on hibiscus cuttings; Chong et al, 2008) and Planococcus kraunhiae (37.8 days reared on broad bean seeds; narai and Murai, 2002).…”

“…However, no significant difference in adult longevity of males and females of the mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus reared on different hosts. Mean longevity of adult males and females kept at 25 ºC was 2.3 day and 21.2 day, respectively (Amarasekare et al, 2008). Adult longevity of the citrus mealybug, P. citri at three different constant temperatures (18, 24 and 30 o C) on citrus was 17.3, 13.1and 11.7 days, respectively (Ahmed and AbdRabou, 2010).…”
