Ligand Contributions to the Electronic Structures of the Oxidized Cobalt(II) salen Complexes

Abstract: Square planar cobalt(II) complexes of salen ligands N,N'-bis(3-tert-butyl-5R-salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine), where R = OMe (1) and tert-butyl (2), were prepared. 1 and 2 were electrochemically reversibly oxidized into cations [1-H(2)O](+) and [2-H(2)O](+) in CH(2)Cl(2). The chemically generated [1-H(2)O](SbF(6))·0.68 H(2)O·0.82CH(2)Cl(2) and [2-H(2)O](SbF(6))·0.3H(2)O·0.85CH(2)Cl(2) were characterized by X-ray diffraction and NIR spectroscopy. Both complexes are paramagnetic species containing a square … Show more

“…The Co complexes CoSal R1,R2 were synthesised in good yields from the metallation of the corresponding ligands H 2 Sal R1,R2 with Co(OAc) 2 •4H 2 O. [50][51][52][53][54][55] CoSal tBu,NO2 yielded crystals suitable for X-ray analysis, using THF-pentane as the recrystallisation solvents. The molecular structure of CoSal tBu,NO2 •THF is shown in Fig.…”

“…S1 ‡). 53,56 The more positive redox potential for the NO 2 derivative is due to the presence of electron-withdrawing groups in the para position. The positive shift in the potential for the NO 2 derivative (and the use of THF as the solvent) results in only one of the redox processes being visible by CV in this work.…”

“…Recently, Fujii and co‐workers reported Co(salen)(X) complex with the 40 % character of Co II (salen •+ )(X) and 60 % character of Co III (salen)(X) . Thomas and co‐workers have shown similar kind of cobalt(II) salen complex and one electron oxidized complex was found to have 70 % electron density over the cobalt ion and remaining 30 % electron density spreading over the ligand . In another report by the same group, phenolato donor was replaced by the anilido donor and the resultant complex was found to have 75 % contribution of metal ion in SOMO …”

Propylene oxide was distilled under argon after drying over calcium hydride.…”

“…For example, the O 2 /acid oxidation of Co II –salcy species, is not applicable to the preparation of 2 , possibly due to the potential for overoxidation. As an alternative oxidation method to form [Co III (MeO‐salcy)], milder oxidants such as AgSbF 6 + are known to be effective, but thus‐prepared Co III complexes have never been applied to epoxide/CO 2 copolymerization.…”
