Ligaria cuneifolia (Ruiz & Pav.) Tiegh. (Loranthaceae), the 'Argentine mistletoe', is a hemiparasite species largely used in folk medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo methods. A screening of phenolics was performed by UV spectroscopy on different fractions. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated in vitro by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH *) assay on a crude extract (CE), ethyl acetate fraction (EAF), and aqueous fraction (AF). The results suggest that EAF concentrates the antioxidant capacity and was selected for further analysis. Capillary electrophoresis was employed to monitor the individual antioxidant capacity and the potential contributors to this effect. Ex vivo assays showed an efficient inhibition of tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced rat liver phospholipid oxidation, as well as rat brain autoxidation, and H 2 O 2-induced DNA damage in blood monocytes. In vivo, the topical application of EAF significantly decreased skin chemiluminescence in a mice model.

The antioxidant potential of mistletoe (Viscum album L. var. coloratum Ohwi; VAL) extract in uncooked pork patties was evaluated. Three concentrations of VAL extract (0.1 [T1], 0.5% [T2] and 1.0% [T3]) along with 0.02% ascorbic acid as a positive control (V) were added to ground pork and pork patties were prepared. Incorporation of VAL extract decreased (p<0.05) the pH of the pork patties throughout the storage time and reduced (p<0.01) the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance values after day 14 of storage. Total plate counts of the VAL extract-treated samples and V-treated samples were also significantly lower (p<0.01) than that of the control (C) throughout the storage period. In addition, odor scores of the VAL extract-treated patties were lower than those of the C- or V-treated samples on 3rd day of the storage period. These results demonstrated that the VAL extract acts as a natural antioxidant in uncooked pork products.

Ligaria cuneifolia (Lc) (R. et P.) Tiegh. (Loranthaceae), popularmente conocida como “muérdago criollo”, “liga” o “liguilla”, es una especie hemiparásita, que se encuentra en el centro y norte de Argentina. En medicina tradicional es utilizada para disminuir la presión arterial y el colesterol. Basándonos en las observaciones empíricas, planteamos como objetivo demostrar científicamente que Ligaria cuneifolia tiene propiedades hipotensoras e hipocolesterolémicas. En ratas Wistar machos adultas alimentadas con dieta normal, enriquecida en colesterol y en hiperlipémicas (alimentadas con High Fat Diet), demostramos que el tratamiento por vía intraperitoneal con una fracción enriquecida en Proantocianidinas extraídas de Lc (PLc) produce disminución del 40% del colesterol plasmático (Co) debido al aumento de la velocidad de excreción biliar de sales biliares, así como disminución de triglicéridos y LDLCo, sin producir cambios en la fluidez de la sangre. Evaluamos el efecto vasoactivo de PLc in vitro en anillos de aorta aislada de ratas determinando su tensión isométrica, presentando efecto vasodilatador dependiente de endotelio, ya que la remoción mecánica del mismo anula completamente la relajación. El tratamiento con infusión de extracto liofilizado de hojas y tallos de Lc ingerida tres veces por semana durante dos meses por pacientes hipercolesterolémicos de ambos sexos (edad: 50 ± 15 años), permitió observar descenso en los niveles Co y LDLCo, sin mostrar alteraciones en la fluidez de la sangre ni en la funcion hepático. Conclusión: Ligaria cuneifolia sería una potencial herramienta en la prevención de enfermedades cardiovasculares, por disminuir el Colesterol plasmático y presentar un marcado efecto hipotensor.
