Light Particle Tracking Model for Simulating Bed Sediment Transport Load in River Areas

Abstract: In this work a fast computational particles tracer model is developed based on Particle-In-Cell method to estimate the sediment transport in the access zone of a river port area. To apply the particles tracer method, first it is necessary to calculate the hydrodynamic fields of the study zone to determine the velocity fields in the three directions. The particle transport is governed mainly by the velocity fields and the turbulent dispersion. The mechanisms of dispersion and resuspension of particles are based… Show more

“…The use of particle tracking to investigate the dynamics of sediment transport in various flow regimes is a fairly well-established method. Krestenitis et al (2007) and Israel et al (2017) are examples of this approach. Krestenitis et al (2007) investigated the sediment transport in the Gulf of Thermaikos, which constitutes the northwestern corner of the Aegean Sea.…”

“…To execute the sediment transport and deposition simulations in the DR, the AdH/PTM model (Hachaj and Szlapa 2017;Hachaj 2018Hachaj , 2019 was adapted in the current study. AdH is a 2D depth-averaged, finite element, modeling tool for simulating hydrodynamic conditions in river systems, but also in bay, reservoir, and lacustrine systems (Tate et al 2014;Herrera-Díaz et al 2017;Liu et al 2021).…”

“…ico where the climate is very rainy, so seasons of the year are not highly differentiated, with abundant precipitations throughout the whole year. Thus, it is important to differentiate between the typical characteristic climate periods in the study area, such as summertime and wintertime, because the dynamics can significantly change [79]; for instance, they have influence on parameters that define the transport of solutes such as salinity [80] or sediments [31,81,82]. For the purpose of yielding to results which can be compared with stationary measurements in situ, wet and dry seasons for this study are selected, as detailed in Table 2 [52,56].…”
