Linear and Volumetric Analysis of Maxillary Sinus Pneumatization in a Sri Lankan Population Using Cone Beam Computer Tomography

Abstract: Objective. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the linear and volumetric measurements of the maxillary sinus in relation to sex and side on cone beam computer tomographic (CBCT) images in a Sri Lankan population. Methods. A total of 20 sets of CBCT images selected from the database at the Division of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, were evaluated. Linear measurements were obtained in a craniocaudal (height), anteroposterior (length), and m… Show more

“…The measurement of anatomical structures within tomographic imaging, such as teeth, bone, and the maxillary sinus, constitutes a well-established practice in the field of dentistry. 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 Nonetheless, it is worth noting the lack of published literature pertaining to the three-dimensional volumetric measurement of PMMA grafts after their implantation. Three-dimensional technology has been used for the fabrication and subsequent printing of PMMA grafts for the management of gingival smile.…”

“…However, in some studies, there was no significant difference between gender and maxillary sinus volume. 9,[16][17][18] The different results may be due to the differences in female-male ratio, race, and in sinus volume calculation methods. In this study, the mean maxillary sinus volume was 61.46 ± 20.73 cm³ in men and 49.96 ± 19.66 cm³ in women, and the difference between them was statistically significant.…”

“…More than 50 variants of the structure of the pneumatized skull bones, including their hyperpneumatization, have been described in the literature (Earwaker, 1993;Marino et al, 2020). Diagnosing hyperpneumatization is associated with certain diffi culties, because in the adult population without visible/verifi ed pathology, the linear dimensions and volume of the frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses vary considerably (Hettiarachchi et al, 2021;Metin-Gürsoy et al, 2020;Jaworek-Troć et al, 2021). Therefore, in addition to assessing the size of the air space, other criteria should be considered.…”
