Linguistic, Cultural, and Biological Diversity

Abstract: Over the past decade, the field of biocultural diversity has arisen as an area of transdisciplinary research concerned with investigating the links between the world's linguistic, cultural, and biological diversity as manifestations of the diversity of life. The impetus for the emergence of this field came from the observation that all three diversities are under threat by some of the same forces and from the perception that loss of diversity at all levels spells dramatic consequences for humanity and the eart… Show more

“…Most of the conservation and use of forest resources in Mexico are the responsibility of indigenous ethnicities, responsibility that it is inherited from generation to generation (Boege, 2008; Pretty et al., 2009). We suggest that it is imperative to legitimize and strengthen community property to support genetic resource management and conservation (Maffi, 2005; Naughton‐Treves & Wendland, 2014). Finally, we propose future work to model the current potential distribution of Phaseolus spp.…”

“…The link between cultural practices, traditional ecological knowledge and biodiversity conservation has been widely noted (Barthel et al 2010;Ormsby & Bhagwat 2010;Maffi 2005), and it is striking to think that a change in drinking preferences (from mint tea to instant coffee) could have serious consequences on pollination networks in this region. The inclusion of plants and flowers of cultural importance alongside food crops seems to have both social and ecological benefits that likely apply in other homegarden systems.…”
