Link between exposure of fish (Solea solea) to PAHs and metabolites: Application to the “Erika” oil spill

Abstract: An analytical method consisting in enzymatic deconjugation, solid phase extraction and purification, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis after derivatization was used in this study to quantify Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites in the bile of fish. The method has been applied in a laboratory experiment studying the fate of pyrene in basin containing soles. This study has allowed the identification of 1-hydroxypyrene as the single metabolite in bile after enzymatic deconjugation. In… Show more

“…Ant/(Ant + Phe) ratios of >0.1 are the indicator of pyrogenic origin of PAHs, while <0.1 ratios are petrogenic origin of PAHs [51]. Meanwhile, a Fla/(Fla + Pyr) < 0.4 ratio indicates a petroleum source, a ratio between 0.4 and 0.5 indicates liquid fossil fuel combustion, and a ratio of >0.50 suggests the combustion of biomass and coal [53,54]. In addition, BaA/(BaA + Chr) ratio is considered as a specific marker for coal combustion [55,56].…”

“…Previous incidents of oil spills around the world, including the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989, the ApexBarge in Galveston Bay in 1990, and the Erika off the Atlantic coast of France in 1999, have resulted in serious contamination of marine life (BUDZINSKI et al, 2004); self-purification of major contaminants in marine and fresh water environment requires a long time to complete (BARBOUR et al, 1986).…”
