Previous research suggests that the way grammatical aspect is encoded in the speaker's L1 influences event conceptualisation and its subprocesses even in highly advanced L2. Given the lack of consensus regarding the susceptibility to restructuring L1 principles in L2, this work contributes to the debate with two innovative components: it tests whether the susceptibility to adjust L1 (Czech and Hungarian) structuring principles in L2 (English) is dependent on a specific degree of L1-L2 overlap in aspect marking, and it examines unique learner-specific structuring techniques that surface in picture descriptions and film retellings, to illustrate how bilinguals’ temporal reference frames converge. Besides signalling the construction of a unitary conceptual frame, L2 results clearly show the importance of language distance for explaining the nature of sequential bilinguals’ temporal structuring. To embrace the implications of the reported phenomenon, a novel proposal is developed, incorporating grammatical knowledge types already at the stage of conceptualisation.

On the basis of previous cross-linguistic analyses of (re)narrations of the same animation film in German and English, the present study shows how these (re)narrations in Dutch as another Germanic language seem to side more with German than with English in the temporal management of the story-line. Dutch speakers -just as German speakers -structure their story in sequential, bounded events, typically introduced by en dan 'and then' and pushed forward by an animate protagonist. English speakers use a large number of progressive forms, presenting an overlapping series of unbounded situations. In the management of reference to entities however, Dutch differs in a very subtle way from German in subordinate utterances where Dutch speakers use more inanimate entities as a syntactic subject than German speakers.

Our study focuses on morpho-syntactic complexity, trying to identify the specific subordinated modalities of organizing and packaging information in a narration. This purpose will be achieved by combining the morpho-syntactic analysis with the type of contents that subordinate clauses convey with respect to the informational flux of textual structure (foreground vs. background alternation). A functionalist and enunciative framework is adopted. The following questions will be addressed: (1) which types of morpho-syntactic structures -main or subordinated, finite or non finite -are exploited to convey the subordinated contents selected? (2) do the informants tend to hierarchize the expressed contents? (3) which types of semantic and/or logical components (temporality, causality, etc.) are selected to be narrated and highlighted through subordination? We shall demonstrate that only the interaction of several factors -core morphological facts, interactional and discourse habits -can exhaustively explain the textual perspectives observed in our L1 and L2 data, with interesting consequences for second language acquisition.
