Lipid accumulation and alkaline phosphatase activity in human preadipocytes isolated from different body fat depots

Abstract: Background: Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) controls intracellular lipid accumulation in human preadipocytes, but it is not known whether ALP is expressed in all body fat depots, or whether it has a similar role at all sites.Design: Cross-sectional.Setting and subjects: Subjects undergoing breast reduction and abdominal fat biopsies operations at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Outcome measures:This study compared intracellular lipid accumulation and ALP activity in the presence and absence of ALP … Show more

“…Furthermore, it has been reported that in intact human pre‐adipocytes levamisole increases TNSALP activity but inhibits intracellular lipid accumulation whilst in cell extracts it inhibits TNSALP (Ali et al . , ). These data further suggest that levamisole may modulate lipid accumulation independently of its effects on TNSALP.…”

“…We found that only serum levels of ALP had a significant correlation with VFA, and the other laboratory test showed no significant correlation with this index. Ali AT et al suggested that ALP is involved in controlling of intracellular lipid accumulation in human preadipocytes [ 23 ]. In a study on middle-aged Korean men regarding the association between serum ALP levels and development of the MetS over four years, ALP showed a significant association with abdominal obesity and risk of developing MetS [ 24 ].…”

“…BMMSCs lose chondrogenesis and adipogenesis after passaging whereas osteogenesis is the last differentiation potency to lose [ 29 ]. The other is that ALP is involved in the control of intracellular lipid accumulation in preadipocyte maturation [ 30 , 31 ], therefore, absence of ALP may prevent formation of lipid in cells.…”
