Lipid Based Nano‐biosensors for Medical Diagnostics

Abstract

Lipid membrane based nano-biosensors have been exploited in biosensor technology for the last 30 years. Recent advances in the stabilization of lipid membranes have recently increased the number of publications; however, the applications for the construction of medical devices for diagnostics are still limited. The objective of the present article is to describe recent methods for the construction of stabilized lipid film biosensors and advances in uses of lipid film based nano-biosensors for medical diagnostics. These novel devices could be used for the quantification of high-risk toxicants in the human body. Such developments include the production of biochips to detect neurotransmitters, proteins, DNA, and small molecules, such as glucose. Recent research is focused on the construction of a portable device that will be commercialized and readily be used by nonskilled personnel for the remote sensing of biomedical interest analytes.
