Lipids and lipid-reactive antibodies as biomarkers for multiple sclerosis

Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that targets the central nervous system (CNS). MS initially follows a relapsing–remitting course (RRMS) in which acute attacks are followed by a complete recovery. Eventually, 65% of the RRMS patients go on to develop secondary progressive MS (SPMS), characterized by the progressive and irreversible accumulation of neurological disability. It has been proposed that the transition from RRMS to SPMS results from changes in the nature of the inflammatory response a… Show more

“…The recently identified antibody against the potassium channel protein KIR4.1, for example, is detectable in not even 50% of MS patients [57]. In summary: No highly MS specific antigen or autoantibody signature could be identified yet [42,[58][59][60][61][62].…”

“…Lipids are also important targets of the autoimmune response in MS (69 ). To investigate the immune response to lipids in MS, Kanter et al developed microarrays of lipids present in the myelin sheath, including ganglioside, sulfatide, cerebroside, sphingomyelin, and total brain lipid fractions (13 ).…”

“…Lipids and related antibodies even could be considered biomarkers during the monitoring of disease progression and evaluation effects of treatment in MS [6] . Total cholesterol (TC) is an essential component of compact myelin and associated with membranes of astrocytes and neurons [6,7] .…”

Total cholesterol (TC) is an essential component of compact myelin and associated with membranes of astrocytes and neurons [6,7] . Triglyceride (TG) could cause vascular endothelial dysfunction and inflammation by affecting the expression of multiple proinflammatory, procoagulant, and proapoptotic genes [8] .…”
