Lipoproteins, Insulin and Glycaemic Control in Diabetes

Abstract: Elevated plasma concentrations of triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (chol) are well recognized in diabetes (Saudek and Eder 1979), and are of potential importance in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We measured lipids and lipoproteins in insulin and non-insulin treated diabetic patients, and in non-diabetic controls. Results are corrected for differences in body weight, and also related to glycaemic control and insulin levels. Methods We studied 104 adult diabetic outpatients and 89 age and sex matched con… Show more

“…Alloxan is known for its selective pancreatic islet β cell cytotoxicity and has been extensively used to induce diabetes mellitus in animals [67]. Generalized increase in the level of blood glucose during diabetes has been consistently reported both in animal models [68] and humans especially those suffering from insulin dependent diabetes mellitus [69]. In this study, increase in blood glucose level was observed on induction of diabetes mellitus in the rats models, which has been reduced in a dose dependent manner with the highest percentage reduction at 300 mg/kg (Tables 1 and 2).…”
