Liposuction: 25 Years of Experience in 26,259 Patients Using Different Devices

Abstract: The incidence of anemia was reduced significantly in patients undergoing tumescent liposuction versus dry liposuction. However, the occurrence of seroma increased with the introduction of tumescent liposuction. The incidence of postoperative pain and fibrosis was similar for all liposuction techniques reviewed. The aesthetic results obtained using ultrasound- or laser-assisted liposuction were similar to those obtaining using other techniques.

“…Over the last few years, autologous fat grafting has been at the forefront of aesthetic plastic surgery clinical practice, since it provides exceptional results for the treatment of soft-tissue contour deformities (1,2). Similar to bone marrow, the adipose tissue is derived from the embryonic mesenchyme and contains a supportive stromal vascular fraction (SVF) that can be easily isolated (3).…”

“…10 On the other hand, tumescent liposuction showed less anemia but more seroma in comparison with dry liposuction. 12 Further instrumental improvement was made by Toledo in 1988 by presenting disposable syringes with different sizes for harvesting adipose tissue. 13 A great advantage of disposable syringes for aspiration of adipose tissue is the reduced risk of contamination or biofilms to grow.…”

“…Lysis of the adipocyte membrane by laser‐assisted energy delivered to the subcutaneous adipose tissue reduces traumatic fat removal , increases coagulation of blood vessels leading to less bruising with more rapid recovery , and collagen coagulation stimulates reorganization of the reticular dermis leading to skin tightening and increased skin elasticity . Moreover, a reduced rate of touch ups has also been reported with LAL, as well as the need for touchups .…”
