Liposuction fat-fillant implant for breast augmentation and reconstruction

Abstract: The perfect breast implant fillant material would have higher viscosity than water and would be autologous and harmless. We describe the confinement of liposuction fat in implants using the Lipovacutainer during a routine liposuction procedure. This collected fat is prepared inside the Lipovacutainer and is reinjected through a Lipomedia filling cannula into a leaf valve implant as the fillant in place of saline. The implants are used for bilateral augmentation mammoplasty and breast reconstruction procedures.… Show more

“…Consequently, a 50-70% graft volume reduction due to fat cell/tissue resorption is generally observed [106,107]. Moreover, this fat resorption leads to calcium deposits that hinder mammographic examination and tumor detection [108]. The limitations associated with either the silicon implants or autologous reconstructions highlight the need for better approaches.…”

“…8,9 Some surgeons thereafter performed breast reconstruction or augmentation using fascio-cutaneous flaps, 10 gluteus fat implants, 11 or local pedicle flaps. 12 Injections of fat either directly into the breast 1,2,13 or into previously inserted implants 14 have also been reported. Some authors have even described the cases of women undergoing augmentation mammaplasty by cadaver fat allografts.…”

“…More recently, a paper demonstrating one year safety of rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with autologous SVF was published [123]. The general safety of fat grafting is widely accepted in that this is a common procedure in cosmetic surgery [141,142]. …”
