Listeria monocytogenes in retailed raw chicken meat in Malaysia

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the prevalence Listeria monocytogenes in raw chicken meat samples at hypermarkets and wet markets. Chicken drumsticks, breasts, and thighs were randomly selected. The most probable number (MPN) PCR method was used to quantify the L. monocytogenes in the samples. Listeria monocytogenes was detected in 20% of the samples. Occurrence of L. monocytogenes was highest in breast (42.03%) followed by drumstick (11.27%) and thigh (7.14%). Samples from hypermarkets showed higher occurrence … Show more

“…These values are in agreement with a study performed by Mahmood and his colleagues Mahmood et al [16]. However, the occurrence of L. monocytogenes in the current research was lower than that found in work carried out by Goh, et al [17]. Another research conducted by Ayaz et al [18], showed a higher incidence of L. monocytogenes in chicken meat (20.4%), although the numbers of samples were higher compared to those for the current study Ayaz et al [18].…”

“…The most frequent isolation occurred after the plucking and evisceration stages, although no isolate was identified as L. monocytogenes. Research work has been undertaken to identify this pathogen in chicken cuts or products exposed on the market [7,25,26].…”

“…The contamination level by degrading and pathogenic indicator microorganisms, such as Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes is still a fact that should be set right in broiler abattoirs and in selling outlets where these products and their derivatives are commercialized [6,7,8].…”
