Listerien-Endophthalmitis

Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of endogenous endophthalmitis. During the last 20 years about 30 cases have been published, all of which showed similar clinical features and a profound visual loss mainly owing to delayed diagnosis. This case report is about an otherwise healthy 41-year-old woman whose diagnosis was established 17 days after the onset of symptoms by microbiological cultures. Under sufficient therapy signs of local inflammation disappeared and intraocular pressure decreased. Pars plana vi… Show more

“…To date, all cases of L. monocytogenes endophthalmitis have been presumed to be endogenous,2,6,7,9,12,14 although L. monocytogenes has the ability to penetrate intact conjunctival and corneal epithelium. The pathogenesis of bacterial infection often involves a compromised epithelial surface, because an intact epithelium is an effective barrier to most organisms.…”

“…Because of early, aggressive antibiotic use, our patient recovered uneventfully and did not develop the endophthalmitis that routinely plagued similar cases depicted in the literature. Various authors share the opinion that early treatment confers the best prognosis with respect to preserving visual acuity [6]. …”

“…Listeria-monocytogenes-Endophthalmitis nach intermediärer Uveitis und PPV bei Ablatio retinae Almost all cases showed similar clinical features as in the case reported here, including poor visual outcome, elevated intraocular pressure and fibrinoid anterior chamber reaction. Several patients developed a dark hypopyon [7]. The diagnosis is made only after classical culture techniques which takes several days and may delay proper antibiotic treatment.…”
