Listeriosis in human pregnancy: a systematic review

Abstract: Listeria is commonly found in processed and prepared foods and listeriosis is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Preventative measures are well prescribed and monitoring and voluntary recall of contaminated products has resulted in a 44% reduction in the prevalence of perinatal listeriosis in the USA. Pregnant women are at high risk for listeriosis, but symptoms are non-specific and diagnosis is difficult. The intracellular life-cycle of Listeria protects the bacterium from host innate and adaptive … Show more

“…Starting in the 1960s, as a result of the introduction and widespread use of refrigerators, processed foods and extended shelf life foods became more associated with listeriosis due to L. monocytogenes [5]. This pathogen in addition to its zoonotic potential is also an important environmental contaminant of public health significance [6].…”

“…Pregnant women, particularly those in their third trimester, can develop L. monocytogenes induced chorioamnionitis (an infection of placental tissues) and infection of the foetus leading to abortion in 20-50% of cases [4]. Cases of listeriosis are generally sporadic but epidemics occur, such as that of 2011 in USA that resulted from contaminated cantaloupes and for which 147 cases and 33 deaths have been reported [5].…”

“…Listeria monocytogenes was identified in 2 cases and in the other 2 Listeria spp was reported. We could not do a serotype analysis, but around the world, the predominant serotypes tend to be similar: 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b (1,7,10).…”

“…Other contamination sources have been reported as cantaloupe, hot dogs, sushi rolls, and meat pates. Most cases are sporadic and others are associated with an outbreak (1,3,4,5).…”
