A Methodology for Assessing the Impact of Living Labs on Urban Design: The Case of the Furnish Project

This paper presents a framework to support the assessment of urban design projects through Urban Living Labs (ULLs). The framework is based on the Tactical Urbanism (TU) practices and involves the use of Mobile Urban Elements (MUE) in uncertain and potentially confusing conditions (e.g., the COVID-19 context). The methodology includes the application of the Four-Phase Model (problem and ideation; development; implementation, testing and assessment; final proposal) and a quantitative and qualitative assessment. The proposed assessment criteria were developed through an evaluation according to three aspects: (1) feasibility impact; (2) social impact; and (3) spatial impact. The methodology was applied to Furnish, an urban design project based on a ULL and prototyping, which was recently developed in five European cities. The empirical results, obtained using the impact analysis, indicate that the prototypes developed in the project are transferable to other cities and generate social interaction in public spaces. The applied research showed that the Four-Phase Model may be used as a new and improved iterative design process: the LOOP Scheme. The application of this assessment methodology to ULLs may provide valuable information for the future planning of urban interventions in public spaces.

Nowadays cities face numerous challenges amplified to build necessary urban municipal and community capacity to ensure sustainability transformation to respond to the local and global challenges of climate change, inequality, and access to resources. This research combines the study fields of sustainability, economic development, governance of sustainability transformation, providing the multidisciplinary approach as a systemic-oriented view encompassing the social, technological and ecological aspects of urban transformation. The purpose of the paper is to explore how the concept of urban transformation could be operationalized for research of economic development under the economic strain assuming the emergency of Covid-19 grand challenge. The research methods used are a systematic literature review and the content analysis. The paper provides a detailed characterization of the urban transformation exploring this concept from the structure and system perspectives for the economic exit from the crisis.

Living labs are an extremely attractive opportunity for Korean companies to enhance collaborative research and transform development activities targeting the complexity of today’s economic changes. However, although there is plenty of technological support for collaboration, Korean companies still lack clear understanding how to improve business processes in the living lab ecosystem. The main problem is that the development of living labs in Korea is in the early stages due to the significant market regulation system and the gap between the innovation system and market regulation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of living labs on the innovation ecosystem of South Korea, therefore the research is focused on the innovation process within university–industry cooperation. The focus is on the structures, objectives, and drivers of the collaborative innovation ecosystem and elements of living labs. The expert method was applied and the interviews were arranged with 30 executives of high-tech start-up domestic projects; the main hypothesis was that different elements of living labs have direct and positive impacts on the development of the innovation ecosystem; additionally. A case study of the local university–industry environment was conducted, and the evaluation showed that there is a positive correlation innovation networks and living lab structures.
