Land use changes are heralded as a major driver of biodiversity loss. However, recent findings show that cities, perhaps the most radical habitat transformation, sustain increasing numbers of threatened species. This emerging trend has been mostly chronicled for vertebrates from landlocked cities, although loss of biodiversity and rates or urbanization are higher in coastal marine systems. To advance our understanding on how threatened species may conquer human‐dominated systems, we studied the threatened edible crab Cardisoma guanhumi and assessed how it is proliferating in croplands and urban systems at different spatial scales and whether populations show consequences of long‐term exploitation. We gathered the data on crab populations covering the whole distribution range, including three countries reporting this as a threatened species. The abundance, distribution, and size structure of crab populations among different land uses at local scales were compared and published data for populations thriving in different habitats throughout their distribution range were compiled. We found that at local scale this species is able to thrive in natural and human‐disturbed habitats, where food sources are heavily altered. At larger scales, the species showed no differences in abundance and size structure among natural and anthropogenic habitats. In areas near the southern distribution edge, crab populations were more abundant and composed of larger animals in urban areas and croplands than those in natural habitats, suggesting that human‐disturbed systems are stepping stones to extend the geographic range. However, we found a long‐term reduction in maximum body size, exacerbated by land use changes, that likely reflects exploitation regimes consistently targeting larger crabs. Despite its status as a threatened species, the long history of human exploitation combined with livestock farming practices may explain the proliferation of this crab in human‐dominated systems, which emphasize the need to consider conservation in human‐dominated systems.

O manguezal é responsável por diversos serviços ecossistêmicos e ambientais, e muitas das suas espécies associadas possuem um grande apelo comercial, como o guaiamum (Cardisoma guanhumi Latreille, 1825), apreciado na gastronomia e importante fonte de renda para diversas comunidades. Porém, a degradação dos manguezais e a exploração desta espécie são fatores que podem ameaçá-la. O estudo buscou examinar os aspectos bioecológicos de C. guanhumi frente à sua cadeia produtiva. Foram observadas as técnicas e os atores das diferentes etapas desta cadeia. O método de captura mais utilizado é a ratoeira. Na engorda, os animais são dispostos em diferentes tipos de viveiros e com alimentos variados. Os mesmos são transportados em sacos de ráfia, prática que causa a mortalidade de alguns indivíduos. Na comercialização, os animais são expostos em cordas em tripés. Nesta fase não foi identificada a ocorrência de danos físicos ou morte aos animais. Nos locais de consumo, geralmente ocorre uma segunda engorda dos guaiamuns e o seu abatimento. Em todas as etapas da cadeia produtiva, é notório o conhecimento dos atores acerca da bioecologia do guaiamum. O não cumprimento das exigências legais foi identificado em algumas etapas, como o fato de se coletar fêmeas. O transporte dos guaiamuns foi a etapa identificada como a mais danosa aos animais, pois é quando ocorre o maior número de danos físicos e mortes. Assim, faz-se necessária a adequação legal da prática, especialmente da forma de transporte, bem como a implantação de políticas de suporte aos catadores, regulamentando a sua atividade.

Popularly known as blue land crab,Cardisoma guanhumiis heavily exploited as food and considered as an important economic resource in Brazil. In recent decades, the species has experienced a sharp population decline by the loss and/or degradation of its natural habitat and overfishing. The present study aimed to investigate the genetic variation and connectivity among 154 specimens ofC. guanhumisampled along the coast of Pernambuco in five different levels of tropical mangroves conservation. Nine ISSR primers were used for assessing the genetic variation of the species. The genetic diversity observed inC. guanhumiwas high reinforcing the condition of a resilient species, indicating a good conservation status of this resource in Pernambuco. The hypothesis of panmixia was rejected in favour of a heterogeneous distribution of the genotypes ofC. guanhumi(ФST= 0.19) despite the high gene flow observed in the study region. Such difference could be attributed to the candidate loci being under positive selection and differentially distributed between the geographic regions assessed. The genetic structure showed a pattern of fine-scale genetic structuring better fitted to a model of selection-mediated geographic cline. Cluster analysis and candidate loci under positive selection suggested that the populations ofC. guanhumiin the North-central and South coasts of Pernambuco might be different management units and must be managed independently. In conclusion, exhaustion of natural stocks upon which fishing is totally dependent will lead to serious ecological and sociocultural impacts.
