Local effects induced by dynamic load self-heating in NiTi wires of shape memory alloys

Abstract: Summary The use of shape memory alloys wires in dampers devices for Civil Engineering applications is well documented in the literature. This paper develops a critical discussion on the wire macroscopic behavior and on the associated temperature effects with emphasis on the wire diameter. Vibration damping requires the absorption of mechanical energy and its conversion to heat via the action of hysteresis cycles. The experimental study is carried out on NiTi wires of different diameters. The flat cycles shown … Show more

“…Because of the well-established manufacturing process, wide availability in the market, high-performance efficiency, and superior mechanical property, monofilament SMA wires are the most widely used SMA products in the current investigations and applications [22][23][24][25]. The cost of SMA wires has been significantly decreased over the past decades.…”

“…Memory alloys are used in various fields of industry, including aerospace, automotive, medicine and oil exploration. There has been wide range of experimental research in the field of shape memory alloys (Casciati et al, 2018; Hong et al, 2017; Nespoli et al, 2013; Sun et al, 2014). Furthermore, over the past several decades, numerous studies have been done to investigate the microstructure mechanisms, the effects of engineering these alloys, and their applications (Funakubo and Kennedy, 1987; Otsuka and Wayman, 1999; Perkins, 2012).…”
