Local or regionally recurrent carcinoma of the breast: results of therapy in 121 patients.

Abstract: Local or regional recurrence after primary surgical management for carcinoma of the breast was retrospectively evaluated by presenting stage and management in 121 patients. None had evidence of systemic disease. Management consisted of surgical removal only in 11 patients, removal followed by irradiation in 25, biopsy only followed by irradiation in 43, hormonal therapy after biopsy in 30, and chemotherapy after biopsy in 12. Mean and median follow-up for all patients was 46.9 and 31.5 months, respectively. Pa… Show more

“…66% of the patients were recurrence-free for 2 years, compared with a historical control population of 38 untreated Nuclear polymorphism and prognosis 13 patients, where only 25% remained recurrencefree for 2 years. Beck [1] recommended the application of an adjuvant drug therapy at the time of primary surgery for early recurrence (less than 24 months after primary surgery) and with advanced tumors. Compared with the findings reported by Buzdar, the survival in his population was longer.…”

“…While breast cancer has been established as a primary systemic disease, local tumor control continues to be a major therapeutic goal [1]. The patient is emotionally strained by the re-appearance of tumor tissue in the area of the surgical intervention and/or irradiation, and the resulting deterioration of prognosis.…”

“…concurrent chemotherapy or hyperthermia). The utility of further surgery in achieving local control and long-term survival has been reported in several small retrospective series, but the majority of patients are not resectable [11–16]. In the setting of prior radiation therapy, chest wall re-irradiation alone results in complete responses (CR) and long-term local control in relatively few patients [17,18].…”
