Local wound management: A review of modern techniques and products

Abstract: Management of wounds is a commonly performed and essential aspect of small animal veterinary medicine. Appropriate wound management is a difficult art to master, due to the inherent complexity of the clinical scenario, as well as the ever-evolving nature of the field with the constant addition of new products and techniques. This article reviews key concepts that may help the practitioner better understand the natural process of wound healing, factors that delay healing and strategies to help improve the local… Show more

“…Diabetes, immunosuppression, corticosteroids and smoking may complicate wound healing [7]. Patients with diabetes, in particular, often exhibit abnormalities in cells characterized by low proliferation potential and an impaired ability to respond to environmental signals [8]. A characteristic feature of every wound, regardless of its origin, is chronic inflammation of the wound bed and lack of healing [9].…”

“…[23] Growth factors and other Maspin Anti-angiogenic factor secreted by keratinocytes. [24] Chronic wounds can be treated through standard methods such as dressings, negative pressure therapy or transplantation [8,11,25]. Transplantation of skin on healthy MHC-mismatched recipients leads to rapid immune rejection within 10-14 days with characteristic skin tissue destruction.…”

“…The primary goal of wound management is to facilitate the swiftest possible healing of the wound while minimizing patient discomfort and scarring [ 19 ]. Effective wound treatment should aim to minimize scar tissue formation, reduce necrotic tissue production, and thwart the infiltration of microbes.…”
