Lockdown timing and efficacy in controlling COVID-19 using mobile phone tracking

Abstract: Background: Italy's severe COVID-19 outbreak was addressed by a lockdown that gradually increased in space, time and intensity. The effectiveness of the lockdown has not been precisely assessed with respect to the intensity of mobility restriction and the time until the outbreak receded. “…These stronger isolation policies were probably instrumental in flattening the curve of infections, though not sufficient to bring it to a complete halt. Similar to this case, strong lockdowns involving the enforcement of stringent restrictions to personal movements, use of public spaces, non-essential economic activities and in-office work have successfully contained the spread of COVID-19 in many countries and regions [28,[35][36][37][38][39][40]. Indeed, comparisons between related countries evidence that stricter lockdown policies reduce the number of COVID-19 deaths [41].…”

These studies only focused on countries from the developed and emerging nations, implying that little or nothing is on record concerning the African countries.…”

“…In some countries, strict enforcement of social distancing may not have been necessary due to greater compliance with guidelines (Germany). Alternatively, social distancing may not have been so heavily emphasized or adhered to in some countries, resulting in government-enforced curfews with fines for noncompliance, as experienced in Italy [ 46 , 47 ]. Regardless, clear and repeated guidance should be provided by governments to ensure compliance by their citizens.…”
