Long‐chain unsaturated alcohols from jojoba oil by sodium reduction

Abstract: SummaryJojoba oil is a liquid wax composed essentially of C20 and C22 straight‐chain monoethylenic acids and alcohols in the form of esters. Sodium reduction of the wax fatty esters in jojoba oil yielded quantitatively a mixture of unsaturated, long‐chain alcohols from the acid moiety of the jojoba oil. Yields of about 91% were obtained in the laboratory‐scale experiments and 82 to 86 for the pilot‐plant experiments. Analytical data, including detailed infrared spectra information, are given for the resulting … Show more

“…Crystallographic spacing was also used to identify the major acid. The acid-alcohol composition has been quoted frequently (2,3,6,9,(13)(14)(15)(16)) ever since the 1936 reports without any confirmation because of the challenges Of high resistance of the oil to saponification and isolation as pure fractions and because of the lack of convenient and reliable quantitative means of analysis.…”

“…The criterion for inclusion of unsaturated aliphatic alcohol to this review was chemical structure and available information about its toxicity. A few longer chain unsaturated alcohols are derived from natural sources, which are often significant reservoirs of biologically active substances and provide new insights into their biological activity (Molaison et al, 1959). They were selected substances with proven additional biological activity.…”
