Long-term changes in fecundity of the Kutum,Rutilus frisii kutumKamensky, 1901, in the Caspian Sea (Osteichthyes: Cyprinidae)

Abstract: Changes in length, weight and fecundity of mature females of the Kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) were compared for the periods 1948-1950, 1974 and 2007 in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea. The average fork length decreased from 54.1 over 44.7 to 43.9 cm and the average weight from 2181 over 1295 to 1210 g. However, the average condition factor has remained fairly constant and varied between 1.35 and 1.38. The potential fecundity of the Kutum for the three periods also decreased from 106,800 over 74,600 to 64,40… Show more

The species is a migratory anadromous fish, spawning in rivers in the early spring in March and April (Shikhshabekov ; Holčik ; Afraei Bandpei, Mashhor, Abdolmaleki, Najafpour, Bani, Pourgholam, Fazli, Nasrolahzadeh & Janbaz ), and return to the Caspian Sea after spawning for foraging and gonad development (Sharyati ; Valipour, Kanipour, KhadiviNia Moghaddam & Valinassab ).…”

“…Kutum R. frisii (Nordmann 1840) is an anadromous species that is a major contributor to commercial fisheries in the southern part of the Caspian Sea (Fazli et al ., 2013). Adult R. frisii are winter–spring spawners and migrate annually to spawn in Azerbaijan and Iranian rivers from early February to the end of April (Afraei Bandpei et al ., 2010).…”
