Long-Term Efficiency of Catalytic Converters Operating in Mexico City

Abstract: A 1999 ordinance by the Government of Mexico City bans 1993 model-year vehicles from on-road operation if their catalytic converters are not replaced with new ones. To validate the benefits of this action, we examined three issues related to exhaust emissions of vehicles equipped with catalytic converters. After selecting representative fleets of in-use vehicles, a comparison between emissions and catalyst efficiency in cars with two categories of exhaust emission limits was carried out. For that purpose, two … Show more

“…This is to be expected from vehicles with average mileage that often exceeded 1 million km. This is similar to evidence collected elsewhere (Díaz et al, 2001) and suggests that retrofitting programmes on captive fleets of spark ignition vehicles should be carefully considered first on pilot samples and, depending on results, consider extending them to a fleet level.…”

“…Three way catalysts (TWC) and computerized engine control (closed loop control using an oxygen sensor to regulate fuel injection) have been mandatory on new cars in Mexico since 1993. In 2001, an estimated 1.3 million vehicles (46%) were equipped with an exhaust catalyst, with 0.6 million catalysts being more than 6 years old (17).…”

“…It is well known that emission of cars can increase dramatically, if the catalytic converter is not working properly (see e.g. in 2 ). Moreover, the regular checking of catalytic converters take place only in relatively long time intervals.…”
