Long-Term Multimodal Therapy (Verapamil Associated with Propolis, Blueberry, Vitamin E and Local Diclofenac) on Patients with Peyronie's Disease (Chronic Inflammation of the Tunica Albuginea). Results of a Controlled Study

Abstract: Objective: to demonstrate the possible effectiveness of a long-term multimodal medical therapy in patients with Peyronie's disease (PD) we carried out a controlled study on 82 patients diagnosed with PD, whereas in the scientific literature the conservative treatment of this disease is much discussed. Methods: 82 patients (mean age=53.6±10.1 years-range 23-68) diagnosed with PD were selected for this study. Of these 41 patients (group A) were treated for 18 months as follows: Verapamil penile injections (12 tot… Show more

“…A previous job shows that the anthocyanins isolated from bilberries and black currants, can prevent and treat chronic inflammatory diseases by inhibiting NF-kappaB transactivation and decreasing the concentrations of pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines (Karlsen et al 2007). On the other hand, blueberries have been already successfully used (combination therapy) in other chronic inflammatory diseases, such as Peyronie's disease (PD) (Paulis et al 2012(Paulis et al , 2013: a long-term combination therapy with blueberries is the best treatment for PD.…”

“…Thus, it is necessary to push the work forward using these criteria. Blueberry, a kind of small fruits with fewer side effects, may have perfect health effects on JIA due to its anti-inflammatory activities (Paulis et al 2013;Johnson et al 2013;Esposito et al 2014). However, the role of blueberry for JIA therapy remains unknown, and the therapeutic effects are still needed to be determined.…”

“…The theoretical benefit of blueberry juice as a salvage therapy is associated with the anti-inflammation capacity (30,31) and ability to prevent the progression of various types of cancer (32,33). However, the molecular mechanism of the inhibition of OC by blueberries remains unclear.…”

“…Several studies have evaluated the effectiveness of the mentioned antioxidants in the treatment of PD [17,[22][23][24][47][48][49][50]. The properties of NSAID's, including the anti-inflammatory activity of Diclofenac, are already known, and it has been already used in the multimodal treatment of PD [17,22,24]. The significant improvements obtained in group A and B concern the basic parameters of the disease: plaque size, degree of penile curvature and penile rigidity (if erectile dysfunction was present).…”

“…Nonsurgical treatments include: potaba, Vitamin E, colchicine, tamoxifen, propolis, verapamil, interferons, collagenase, cortisone, pentoxifylline, iloprost, iontophoresi, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) and Capacitive Resistive Energy Transfer (Tcare or TECAR therapy) [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Since we have already experienced the effectiveness of conservative treatment in the early phase of PD [17,[22][23][24], we implemented a controlled study on patients with PD treated in association with several drugs: Pentoxifylline plus several antioxidants (Vitamin E, blueberries and propolis) and topical Diclofenac.…”
