Long-Term Performance of Trestle Bridges: Case Study of an Indonesian Marine Port Structure

Abstract: A precast reinforced concrete (RC) T-beam located in seaport Terminal Peti Kemas (TPS) Surabaya built in 1984 is used as a case study to test the accuracy of non-destructive test techniques against more traditional bridge evaluation tools. This bridge is mainly used to connect the berth in Lamong gulf and the port in Java Island for the logistic purposes. The bridge was retrofitted 26 years into its life by adding two strips of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) due to excessive cracks observed in the beam… Show more

“…NDT plays significant role in failure analysis and control procedures [12]. Classical (eddy-current, magnetic-particle, liquid penetrant, radiographic, ultrasonic and visual testing) or newly developed (e.g., acoustic emission) NDT techniques are used to gain insight into the actual state of the structure, Figure 2.…”

“…Reinforced concrete is extensively applied in water conservancy infrastructure buildings because of its low cost and excellent mechanical properties [1][2][3]. The durability of RC is closely related to various impact factors, such as chloride-induced steel corrosion, sulfate corrosion, carbonation, freezing-thawing cycles for concrete deterioration, and the influences of damage cracks, cover thickness, mix proportion, environmental temperature, and humidity [4][5][6][7][8]. In particular, chloride intruding into concrete, which induces steel corrosion, is considered to be an important factor to the declining durability of marine RC buildings [8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…Approximately 86% of all bridges are in good condition, while the rest are damaged (Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, 2020). Bridge deterioration is caused by a wet, hot, humid climate (Oktavianus et al, 2020). It can also be caused by overloading, as well as foundation, structural, and bridge floor damage (Soetjipto et al, 2017).…”
