Long-term results of palatal implants for obstructive sleep apnea

Abstract: Successful results of palatal implants in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have been reported in the short term; however, there are limited data in the long-term results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results and to determine factors that predicted the responders in patients undergoing palatal implants in the treatment of OSA. A study was undertaken on 92 OSA patients. Palatal implants were conducted to stiffen the soft palate and data were analyzed. Patients tolerated the p… Show more

“…Recently, there have been several studies investigating the efficacy of palatal implants in OSA patients. Apart from prospective case series with longer follow-up periods [9,10], there have been two placebo-controlled trials undertaken in the United States [4,13]. In those trials, the results regarding the effects on objective outcome measures are conflicting, although they both demonstrated a superiority of palatal implants over placebo.…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9] However, the number of studies investigating the reliability and longterm results is limited. Neruntarat [10] followedup their patients for 26 and 32 months. Threeyear follow-up was carried out by Skj Stad and Nordg [11] and four-year follow-up was carried out by Rotenberg and Luu [12] these are the studies that include the longest term follow-ups.…”

“…Studies that have investigated the efficacy of uvulopalatal flap with tonsillectomy for OSA have shown a significant improvement of the severity of OSA and quality of life [161][162][163][164][165][166][167]. However, it has to be kept in mind that surgical success rates decrease with increasing BMI and AHI in general [168]. Due to a lack of evidence, uvulopalatal flaps are not recommended to treat simple snoring, but can be appropriate for OSA in patients with palatal obstruction.…”
