Purpose The demand of rice by the increase in population in many countries has intensified the application of pesticides and the use of poor quality water to irrigate fields. The terrestrial environment is one compartment affected by these situations, where soil is working as a reservoir, retaining organic pollutants. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methods to determine insecticides in soil and monitor susceptible areas to be contaminated, applying adequate techniques to remediate them. Materials and methods This study investigates the occurrence of ten pyrethroid insecticides (PYs) and its spatio-temporal variance in soil at two different depths collected in two periods (before plow and during rice production), in a paddy field area located in the Mediterranean coast. Pyrethroids were quantified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after ultrasound-assisted extraction with ethyl acetate. The results obtained were assessed statistically using non-parametric methods, and significant statistical differences (p < 0.05) in pyrethroids content with soil depth and proximity to wastewater treatment plants were evaluated. Moreover, a geographic information system (GIS) was used to monitor the occurrence of PYs in paddy fields and detect risk areas. Results and discussion Pyrethroids were detected at concentrations ≤57.0 ng g −1 before plow and ≤62.3 ng g −1 during rice production, being resmethrin and cyfluthrin the compounds found at higher concentrations in soil. Pyrethroids were detected mainly at the top soil, and a GIS program was used to depict the obtained results, showing that effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were the main sources of soil contamination. No toxic effects were expected to soil organisms, but it is of concern that PYs may affect aquatic organisms, which represents the worst case scenario. Conclusions A methodology to determine pyrethroids in soil was developed to monitor a paddy field area. The use of water from WWTPs to irrigate rice fields is one of the main pollution sources of pyrethroids. It is a matter of concern that PYs may present toxic effects on aquatic organisms, as they can be desorbed from soil. Phytoremediation may play an important role in this area, reducing the possible risk associated to PYs levels in soil.

Arthropod Pest Control for UK Oilseed Rape – Comparing Insecticide Efficacies, Side Effects and Alternatives

Oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an important combinable break crop in the UK, which is largely protected from arthropod pests by insecticidal chemicals. Despite ongoing debate regarding the use of neonicotinoids, the dominant seed treatment ingredients used for this crop, there is little publicly available data comparing the efficacy of insecticides in controlling key arthropod pests or comparing the impacts on non-target species and the wider environment. To provide an insight into these matters, a UK-wide expert survey targeting agronomists and entomologists was conducted from March to June 2015. Based on the opinions of 90 respondents, an average of 20% yield loss caused by the key arthropod pests was expected to have occurred in the absence of insecticide treatments. Relatively older chemical groups were perceived to have lower efficacy for target pests than newer ones, partly due to the development of insecticide resistance. Without neonicotinoid seed treatments, a lack of good control for cabbage stem flea beetle was perceived. Wide spectrum foliar insecticide sprays were perceived to have significantly greater negative impacts than seed treatments on users’ health, natural enemies, pollinators, soil and water, and many foliar active ingredients have had potential risks for non-target arthropod species in UK oilseed rape fields for the past 25 years. Overall, 72% of respondents opposed the neonicotinoid restriction, while 10% supported it. Opposition and support of the restriction were largely based on concerns for pollinators and the wider environment, highlighting the uncertainty over the side effects of neonicotinoid use. More people from the government and research institutes leaned towards neutrality over the issue, compared to those directly involved in growing the crop. Neonicotinoid restriction was expected to result in greater effort and expenditure on pest control and lower production (0–1 t/ha less). Alternatives for future oilseed rape protection were then discussed.

ÖzetPestisitler tarım sektöründe ürünlerin verimini, kalitesini artırmak ve ürün depolanması için yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır. Ancak pestisitler hedef olmayan organizmalara zarar vermeleri, pestisit direncine sebep olmaları, bazılarının damutajen ve karsinojen olmasından dolayı endişe yaratmaktadırlar. Bu çalışmada tarımda yaygın olarak kullanılan piretroid grubu bir insektisit olan Siperkor'un mutajenitesi Ames testi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Ames testinde Siperkor'un 5 farklı dozu (250, 25, 2.5, 0.25, 0.025 µg/plak) TA98 veTA100 suşları kullanılarak hem S9 karaciğer enzimi fraksiyonu varlığında hem de yokluğunda test edilmiştir. Her test suşu için deney sırasında suşa özel bir pozitif kontrol kullanılmıştır. TA98 suşu S9'lu deney için 2-aminofluorene (AF), S9'suz deney için 4-nitro-ophenylenediamine(NPD) kullanılırken, TA100 suşu için S9'lu deneyde 2-aminoanthracene (2AA), S9'suz deney için ise sodyum azide (SA)pozitif kontrol olarak kullanılmıştır. Ames testi sonuçlarına göre Siperkor pestisiti sadece TA98 suşunda 250 µg/plak konsantrasyonunda hem S9 fraksiyonu varlığında hem de yokluğunda mutajenik aktivite göstermiştir. In this study Siperkor insectidepyretroid group-which is widely used in agriculture was determined for mutagenicity by using Ames test. Five different concentrations (250, 25, 2.5, 0.25, 0.025 µg/plate), of Siperkor pesticide was tested by Ames test on TA98 and TA100 strains with and without S9 metabolic activation. For each tester strain, a specific positive control was always used to test the experimental flaws, if any. While 4-nitro-ophenylenediamine (NPD) for TA98, sodium azide (SA) for TA100, was used as positive controls without metabolic activation, 2-aminofluorene (AF), 2-aminoanthracene(2AA) was used as positive controls with metabolic activation, respectively. The positive controls also were used in each tester strains. According to Ames test results, only 250 µg/plate, concentration of Siperkor pesticide has shown mutagenic activity on TA98 strain with and without S9 fraction.
