Longitudinal Benefit From and Satisfaction With the Baha System for Patients With Acquired Unilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Abstract: The Baha is effective in reducing psychosocial consequences of unilateral profound SNHL for the long-term. Improvement in speech understanding occurred when the primary signal was spatially separated from background noise. Localization performance did not improve with Baha use. Overall, patients were satisfied with their Baha and would still elect to have this procedure if given a second chance.

“…Newman et al [2008] reported outcomes before and after BCD use in terms of scores on the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) [Ware and Sherbourne, 1992]. The SF-36 includes questions about impairments to eight health dimensions, including physical function, social function and mental health.…”

“…The limited available data therefore suggest that the HUI3 is a generic measure that is sensitive to the effects of hearing-assistive devices on HRQoL in SSD. While no effect size could be computed for the SF-36 data reported by Newman et al [2008], the user manual for the SF-36 suggests that group mean scores below 47 are below average [Maruish, 2011]. The mean data extracted from Newman et al [2008] indicated that social functioning and emotional role function were below average in adults with SSD and improved to average levels after BCD use.…”

“…Interestingly, their group of five patients with SSD and moderate SNHL in the opposite ear showed the same pattern of subjective benefit with the Baha with regard to improvement in speech understanding in everyday situations. Newman et al 23 analyzed the short-term, medium-term, and long-term benefits from the Baha in eight patients with acquired unilateral profound SNHL. They concluded that the Baha offers long-term benefits by improving speech perception in noise, especially in headshadow listening situations.…”

“…The questionnaire examined satisfaction with the device in multiple categories: hearing performance (questions 1, 6,11,12,13,14,15,18,24), listening in groups (questions 19,20,21,25), listening to music (question 16), localization (question 17), listening in large venues (questions 22,23), and the pragmatic use of the device (questions 2, 3,7,8,9,10,26), Baha satisfaction and sequelae to surgery (questions 27, 28) and change in participation limitation (question 30). For questions 1 to 30, the participant was asked to respond to the questions on a 5-point scale ranging from 1 (Disagree strongly) to 5 (Agree strongly) or not applicable.…”
