Loosening Monitoring of a Threaded Pipe Connection Using the Electro-Mechanical Impedance Technique—Experimental and Numerical Studies

Abstract: Threaded connections are the most common pipe fittings used in oil and gas transportation systems. Due to external vibrations, cyclic loads, and pollution, the fitting parts may start getting loose, which could result in pipeline leaks and other environmental disasters. It is of great significance to develop a reliable technique that could provide real-time monitoring of the looseness of pipeline fittings. In this paper, a piezoceramic-based active sensing method combined with the electro-mechanical impedance … Show more

“…results in a difference in the FRF response for an application of the electromechanical impedance technique in an electronic circuit equipped with piezoelectric elements [38]. Liang et al [39] employed the FRF method in the study of the loosening monitoring of threaded plumbing structures. The use of this method along with the RMSD index allowed the correlation between the RMSD values and the severity of the loosening found in the threaded structures.…”

“…In addition, the piezoceramic-based active sensing method combined with the time reversal technique has also been utilized to identify when the connection becomes loose and evaluate the severity of the looseness [29]. In 2018 [30], tried to apply an EMIbased technique to monitor the health condition of threaded pipe connections in real time, but the impedance signatures in this research were acquired by a professional impedance analyzer.…”

“…Changes in the EMI of a piezoelectric transducer can be quantified by the root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of the impedance signatures. e RMSD has been used as an index to quantitatively evaluate damage in a variety of structures [21][22][23][24]. e frequency shift of an acquired impedance signal was also utilized as a metric to estimate the health of the structure.…”
