“…Fasting serum total cholesterol, atherogenic low-density cholesterol and TG concentrations tend to increase, whereas the anti-atherogenic high-density cholesterol concentrations tend to decrease. A decrease in anti-atherogenic HDL-C is indicative of an impaired reverse cholesterol transport pathway, 22,23 which over time accelerates atherosclerosis. The increase of the cardiac risk ratios total-C/LDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C above the desirable range attests to an elevated CVD risk.…”

“…In 3,014 patients (mean age 54 years; 55% women), TG/HDL-C ratio and T-C/HDL-C ratio were related to insulin resistance assessed by the top quartile of the HOMA-IR, and the area under the ROC curves for predicting insulin resistance with TG/HDL-C ratio and T-C/HDL-C ratio were 0.745 and 0.707, respectively [19]. LDL-C/HDL-C ratio [20] as well as TG/HDL-C ratio [21] have advantages for standardization and identification of patients with an atherogenic lipoprotein profile as a surrogate maker of insulin resistance. Also in our study, both LDL-C/HDL-C and TG/HDL-C ratio were useful makers of insulin resistance, especially in all subjects or non-obese subjects.…”

“…Metabolic disease remains a serious concern in the world, and people with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes ( 9, 10 ). It is known that the functions and concentrations of serum HDL have strong inverse correlations with risk of metabolic syndrome and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (11)(12)(13). HDL is known to undergo dramatic modifi cation in structure and composition under the concerted actions of infl ammation and oxidative stress ( 14,15 ).…”
