“…Initial results from BRELT1 17 indicated 39.4% of 790 participants had positive CT scans, significantly different from results of the NLST, and a non–small-cell lung cancer prevalence of 1.3%, similar to that of NLST and other studies. These results support the role of lung cancer screening in countries with a high incidence of granulomatous inflammation.…”

“…There are > 20 countries in LATAM, but we are using the example of Brazil because of the large number of people that live there and because it is the first country in LATAM to be more in favor of LDCT. After the publication of the results from the NLST, 16 the First Brazilian Lung Cancer Screening Trial (BRELT1) 17 was established—the first program for lung cancer screening in Brazil. The program became active in 2013, with the goal of recruiting 1,000 individuals at high risk for lung cancer for LDCT screening and a comprehensive smoking cessation program.…”

“…[10] There had been no lung cancer screening studies in Latin America until the Brazilian Early Lung Cancer Detection Trial (BRELT -ProPulmão) was initiated in Brazil. [11] The subsequent BRELT1 and BRELT2 studies contributed data and insights on lung cancer prevalence and screening efficacy. [12,13] The current BRELT3 study aims to investigate the challenges associated with implementing lung cancer screening programs in remote regions distant from major urban centers, where access to healthcare and resources is often scarce.…”

“…The LC screening studies have proposed the nodule management protocol based on parameters specified by the thoracic oncology groups or strategies recommended by the Fleischner society. 7,[9][10][11][12] In Brazil, the LC screening is not well defined by the public health practice, however the First Brazilian Lung Cancer Screening Trial (BRELT1) reported 312 participants (of 790 cases) were positive LDCT scans, with nodules larger than 4 mm. 11 The large number of positive scans in brazilian patients could reflect on the high incidence of tuberculosis.…”
