Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound: Fracture healing

Abstract: Annually, millions of people across the world are inflicted with bone fracture injuries. Untimely healing is a significant burden in terms of socioeconomic costs, personal costs, and patients' quality of life. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has gained much attention as a potential adjunctive therapy for accelerating fresh fracture healing, but its efficacy remains controversial. This paper is presented in two parts a literature review followed by a systematic review. The literature review highlights t… Show more

“…Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a form of ultrasound that delivers ultrasonic energy at a much lower intensity (<3 W/cm 2 ) than traditional ultrasound energy and delivers output in the mode of a pulse wave, and it is typically used for therapeutic purpose in rehabilitation medicine and fracture healing [ 122 ]. For example, LIPUS may become an effective clinical procedure for the treatment of urological diseases, such as chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, erectile dysfunction, and stress urinary incontinence in the field of urology [ 96 ].…”

“…LIPUS have an essential effect on key functional activities of osteoblasts in bone [ 19 , 20 ]. In in vivo rat studies, LIPUS improved bone fracture healing [ 21 ]. LIPUS accelerated bone regeneration of non-critical rat calvarial defects.…”

“…Currently, many surgeons use LIPUS as part of their management of fractures. [ 62 ] However, LIPUS is a high-energy wave that generates heat energy [ 9 ] and the increased heat energy may further aggravate the thermal osteonecrosis caused by bone drilling during the operation. [ 63 ] Thus, the situation under which LIPUS is truly valid should be noted.…”
