Low-Level Laser Therapy in Acute Pain: A Systematic Review of Possible Mechanisms of Action and Clinical Effects in Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trials

Abstract: photoradiation can modulate inflammatory processes in a dose-dependent manner and can be titrated to significantly reduce acute inflammatory pain in clinical settings. Further clinical trials with adequate photoradiation doses are needed to precisely estimate the effect size for photoradiation in acute pain.

“…In the present case, the patient showed a decrease in pain after the 1st LPT session and after 4 sessions the mucositis score was lowered from 3 to 2. LPT caused an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, improving quality of life, reducing the need for analgesics and the medical costs for the patient (15).…”

“…Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been evaluated experimentally by in vitro and in vivo studies as well as in clinical cases 1 . The mechanism that leads to a positive effect of LLLT on the tissues is not completely understood and its therapeutic role remains controversial 1,2 .…”

“…The mechanism that leads to a positive effect of LLLT on the tissues is not completely understood and its therapeutic role remains controversial 1,2 . There are some hypotheses that light energy is absorbed by intracellular chromophores, such as porphyrins and cytochromes, and converted to metabolic energy involving the respiratory chain 2 .…”
