Low- Z boundary of the N=88 –90 shape phase transition: Ce148 near the critical point

Abstract: Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 148 Ce have been populated by neutron-induced fission of 235 U and 241 Pu samples. Their electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2 + 1 and 4 + 1 states of 148 Ce were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B 4/2 = B(E2; 4 + 1 → 2 + 1)/B(E2; 2 + 1 → 0 + 1) ratio indicates that 148 Ce is a transitional nucleus while the N = 88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual c… Show more

“…As it was shown in Ref. [10] this increased axial asymmetry plays an important role in the comparison with the geometrical symmetries and the placement of 148 Ce in the deformed side of the symmetry triangle. This picture was also supported by microscopic calculations for the isotope.…”

“…The N = 90 isotones are in "bold" for easier comparison. the R 4/2 ratio was used to place it along a line [10]. One can see the increasing γ asymmetry along the cerium isotopic chain, by increasing neutron number.…”

“…When combined with VAMOS, additional shielding had to be applied due to fringing magnetic fields interfering with the photomultiplier tubes of the detectors (see Section 4.3). Detectors discussed in this work have also been in use during the EXILL+FATIMA campaign at the ILL, Grenoble, France (see for instance [44]), and at measurements with the RoSPHERE array in Bucharest, Romania (see e.g. [45]).…”
