Low PDCD4 Expression Is Associated With Poor Prognosis of Colorectal Carcinoma

Abstract: Programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) is a tumor suppressor gene that inhibits tumor progression, invasion, and metastasis. Decreased PDCD4 expression is associated with poor prognosis in various types of cancers. We evaluated PDCD4 expression and its clinicopathologic correlation, including patient survival, in 289 surgically resected colorectal cancers. Low nuclear PDCD4 expression was identified in 177 (61.2%) cases and was associated with large tumor size, high pT classification, and the presence of lymphovascul… Show more

“…Furthermore, the tumor suppressor PTEN modulates cell cycle progression and cell survival and its expression was found to be significantly lower in cholesteatoma [70,71], which may account for the impaired inhibition in cholesteatoma. Moreover, programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) plays a role in the pathogenesis of many cancers, including skin cancer [72][73][74]. However, IL-6 and signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) are upstream activators of miR-21, whose role in cholesteatoma epithelial hyperproliferation has also been confirmed [71,75].…”

“…It is unclear why there is disparity between these two studies, but in corroboration with the latter study, cytoplasmic translocation from the nucleus during tumorigenesis has also been seen in the transformation of normal colorectal cells into adenomas and tumours, which was also associated with a loss of expression ( 16 ). Loss of nuclear expression in colorectal cancers has also been suggested as a prognostic indicator for poor survival ( 37 ).…”
