Low sensitivity of reproductive life-stages in the Pacific oyster ( Crassostrea gigas ) to abamectin

Abstract: Hard surfaces submerged in the marine environment often become colonised by macro-organisms unless the surfaces have some form of biofouling protection. While protective paints that contain tributyltin or copper work well to prevent biofouling, release of these materials into the environment has been shown to have wider negative impacts. Consequently, new low-release antifouling paints are being developed with alternative active ingredients, such as avermectins, yet little is known about their potential effect… Show more

“…[32][33][34] AVMs are key insecticides used in pest management, [35][36][37][38][39] and show both acute and sublethal toxicities to few non-target organisms. 40,41 The exposure routes of AVMs to non-target organisms in aquatic systems could be run-offs from land application into freshwater habitats. 42 In our study, exposure of P. clarkii to AVMs was conducted by direct addition into water that crayfishes lived in.…”

“…The unintended effects of agrochemicals on non‐targeted organisms in fresh water have been investigated for decades 32–34 .
